April Desert Trip
Mom, Dan, John and I pile into the subaru with supplies for 6 days and head west to warmer weather.

Day 1 we visit Hovenweep and see Anasazi ruins. We do the driving view tour of Natural Bridges National Monument and then head over to Lake Powell for the night.

Day 2 we take the ferry across to Bull Frog and then drive the scenic roads, including Notom Road and Burr Trail Rd (see below) to the town of Boulder and then down to Hole-in-the-Rock Rd.
Fully loaded.

Day 2 Slot Canyons. Peek-a-boo was narrow, beautiful, and proved a challenge. Below are photos from their plus a new lizard I saw nearby.

The lower section of the slot is the most challenging. John led the way and was particularly helpful guiding the last 30 ft drop.

We hadn't gotten enough, so we hiked up and down the nearby slot of Spooky. It was very narrow and dark. We ran into the family we finished out Peekaboo with and got some family photos.
Day 3 Hiking to the Escalante River from Hole-in-the-Rock Road.

I had never seen this type of lizard until our hike.

It was well into the 80s and maybe higher on the desert hike from high on the plateau to the cool river below.

Day 4: Drive from Escalante to Moab. Here we are along the Cockscomb just south of Boulder, UT.
We did a drive through of Torrey, which hasn't changed much beside the new church under construction. We stopped in Capital Reef National Park to look at petroglyphs and take a nice hike up Capital Wash.

Day 5 Arches National Park.

We wandered around in the Fiery Furnace shown in the two pics below. Then we walked to the 5 arches in Devil's Garden. Day 6 we mountain biked Klondike bluffs, saw dinosaur tracks and then headed back to Ouray. What a great trip!
